Blue Brain venture, completed in December 2006, aimed with the simulation of the rat neocortical line, which can be regarded as the smallest functional unit of the neocortex. There is ongoing work in the field of brain simulation, as well as partial and whole simulations of several animals. For example, the brains of the roundworm C. elegans, fruit fly drosophila melanogaster, sensitive mouse and rat include all been simulated to various degrees.
