The term “biocontainment” was coined in 1985, but the concept stretches back no less than to the 1940s. The concept of biocontainment is associated with laboratory biosafety and pertains to microbiology laboratories that physical containment regarding highly pathogenic microorganisms or agents is needed, usually by remoteness in environmentally and also biologically secure cabinets or rooms, to prevent accidental infection regarding workers or release into the surrounding community while in scientific research.
