Ammonium Lactate

Ammonium Lactate

Ammonium lactate has the formula NH4(C2H4(OH)COO). It is the lactic acid ammonium salt. It contains antibacterial characteristics that are not too strong. It appears in the form of a white solid or liquid. There is no odor. Sinks and dissolves in water. It is an over-the-counter treatment for dry, scaly, and itchy skin. It may stink, and it may make your skin more susceptible to sunburn.

The ammonium salt of lactic acid is ammonium lactate. It is a topical moisturizing organic ammonium salt (lactic acid neutralized with ammonium hydroxide). In ichthyosis vulgaris and xerosis, ammonium lactate can be used as a humectant. This chemical, which is available as a cream or lotion, hydrates the skin while also breaking up the scales. It has E number “E328” and is the active ingredient of the skin lotions Amlactin and Lac-Hydrin.

Ammonium lactate is a chemical compound formed by the reaction of lactic acid with ammonium hydroxide. It’s a skin moisturizer lotion that’s used to treat dry, scaly, itchy skin. It should be avoided by those who use it, as should exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays, such as sunlamps or tanning beds. Ammonium lactate makes skin more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the likelihood of sunburn.

Preparation

Ammonium lactate is the ammonium salt of lactic acid, a natural acid produced by lactose fermentation (milk sugar). It is commercially generated through the bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates and molasses. Ammonium lactate is a preservative, pH regulator, and antimicrobial substance that is extremely efficient against bacteria, fungi, and yeast.

The preparation method of the ammonium lactate solids mainly comprises steps as follows:

(1) Preparation of the ammonium lactate solution : a lactic acid solution reacts with ammonia water to produce the ammonium lactate solution;

(2) Preparation of a concentrated ammonium lactate solution: the ammonium lactate solution is extracted and concentrated using acetonitrile, yielding the concentrated ammonium lactate solution;

(3) Preparation of ammonium lactate solids: the concentrated ammonium lactate solution is dissolved in ethanol, acetonitrile, acetone, or a mixture of acetonitrile and acetone, and the particles are precipitated.

The ammonium lactate solid products prepared using the ammonium lactate solids preparation technique are high in purity, stable, and easy to store and transport, making them excellent for mass industrial production.

Application

Ammonium lactate is a topical treatment for dry, scaly, itchy skin. It can also be used for things that aren’t included in this pharmaceutical guide. Ammonium lactate solution was utilized in the ammonium lactate fermentation broth for traditional electrodialysis to concentrate organic acid salts (EDC).
