Alienware’s Concept Nyx is an at-Home Gaming Server That May Never Exist

Over the last several years, Dell (and its gaming brand, Alienware) has been increasingly fond of displaying concept products as a possible preview of what has to come. In fact, it is an increasing trend in the consumer electronics sector as a whole, emulating the car industry. It is exciting insight either into the future or a bit of a red herring, depending on your looks at it, it is an opportunity for Dell to evaluate public interest in a technology that is not quite ready for prime time. The most well-known recent example is Alienware’s Concept UFO, a portable gaming system that was unveiled this time last year but is currently only a concept.

This year, Concept Nyx joins the offering, acting as an at-home server capable of streaming games around the house. The product’s ultimate goal is to allow homes to simultaneously stream various games to multiple devices, regardless of the hardware they are using. Meanwhile, the controller acts as the main point of contact, connecting to a smart TV, computer, or another device to play the game via a Dell app.

There will very certainly be some issues to iron out, such as price and the amount of processing power required to stream numerous games simultaneously. Adding a number of CPUs and GPUs to a product quickly adds expensive, but none of these appears to be too far out of reach for streaming over home Wi-Fi.

The main question, in my opinion, is how much demand there is for anything. I believe that a significant section of its target audience has already purchased gaming PCs or consoles. Even if they have not, a device like this would have to reasonably price – the promise of simultaneously streaming two (or even four) games in a home is not worth a product that costs the same as two consoles in most cases.

In a blog post, the business writes, we have been investigating ways to power four-game streams at once, smart device switching, and drawing from a central library of all your games, regardless of where they purchased. On Concept Nyx, gaming should be as simple as listening to music, watching TV shows, or watching movies.

Imagine a single app loaded on each device that gives you fast access to all of your games, allowing you to have a more consistent gaming experience across all of your devices at home. Imagine no more bickering about game time with your family or roommates (you can still fight over groceries and laundry). Would not it be great if the barriers were removed so that everyone could play on their own terms?
