Aiphanes is a genus of spiny palms including 20-metre tall subcanopy woods to small shrubs using subterranean stems growing inside forest understorey. In their 1996 monograph within the genus, botanists Finn Borchsenius and Rodrigo Bernal pointed out that ironically, species of Aiphanes are usually very hard to spot and find in dense vegetation and also, accordingly, are among essentially the most poorly collected neotropical palms.
