Human Genome Project was the natural culmination of the history of genetics research. It was the international, collaborative research program whose goal was the complete mapping and understanding of all the genes of human beings. It can be compared to the Apollo program bringing humanity to the moon. Human Genome Project originally aimed to map the nucleotides contained in a human haploid reference genome. The “genome” of any given individual is unique; mapping “the human genome” involves sequencing multiple variations of each gene.
