Catastrophe theory originated with the work of the French mathematician René Thom inside 1960s. It considers the special case in which the long-run stable equilibrium is identified with the minimum of a smooth, well prospective function. Catastrophe theory is usually a branch of bifurcation theory inside study of dynamical systems; it is also a unique special case connected with more general singularity hypothesis in geometry.
