Volcanoes can be extremely hazardous natural phenomena. That is why it is important to understand as much as possible about them, in an attempt to understand the processes involved in eruptions and try to minimize the risk to life and property. Many volcanoes are found in heavily populated areas. Volcanic soil is very fertile and rich in minerals so people move on to the sides of volcanoes to plant crops and graze livestock. This puts them in great danger if there is an eruption.
