The combination or fusion involving three alpha particles to form a carbon nucleus is recognized as the triple alpha process. Older stars start to amass helium produced by the proton–proton chain reaction plus the carbon–nitrogen–oxygen cycle in their cores. This process will occur in red giant stars that have left the main sequence (and have consumed their core hydrogen) and have core temperatures of 108 K and higher.
