Splitting in Psychology is a term, that describes difficulty with the ability to hold opposing thoughts, feelings, or beliefs about oneself or others. It is a process that oscillates between external and internal manifestations. It can also be defined as the division or polarization of beliefs, actions, objects, or persons into good and bad by focusing selectively on their positive or negative attributes. It also implies the use of other related defence mechanisms, namely idealization and devaluation, which are preventive attitudes or reactions to narcissistic rage and narcissistic injury.
