Prospects and Effectiveness of Vehicle Tracking System in Bangladesh

Executive Summary

Vehicle tracking is one of the fastest growing satellite navigation applications today. Tracking systems employ a combination of GPS, cellular, and other electronic technologies to enable a vehicle to communicate its location and condition to an outside source. Vehicle-tracking systems are often called by other names such as automatic vehicle location-monitoring systems or position-reporting systems.

Today, many fleet vehicles, public transportation systems, delivery trucks and courier services use vehicle tracking system to monitor their locations at all times, including speeding which can monitor driver performance. Vehicle tracking systems also can monitor the location of a vehicle if it has been stolen or lost. There are many companies that offer GPS vehicle tracking system service in Bangladesh. The GPS vehicle system is reasonably priced with a low flat monthly fee, no term contract, and simple to install

This internship report contains “Prospects and Effectiveness of Vehicle Tracking System in Bangladesh”. It has been placed in the Nybbles System Ltd (DataNet). This report can give a clear idea about the Vehicle Tracking System and its future prospects in Bangladesh. The researcher have started his analysis from surveying the basic issues regarding Vehicle Tracking System. First, the researcher has discussed the mission, vision, and objective of DataNet. During the short span of its operation, the organization has successfully positioned itself in business community, from cutting-edge technology with proven business expertise to provide turn-key service solutions – innovative combinations of software, hardware, training and people that deliver tremendous impact on a client’s business.

After that, the researcher has described the Vehicle Tracking System and some of its features. Now in Bangladesh VTS is quite familiar with the people who have vehicles. People want to use VTS service to protect their vehicle from various uncertainties. In Bangladesh, some VTS service providers are currently providing this service with great effort. However, this amount is not sufficient for the increasing number of potential customers.

Considering the sources of survey result, the researcher has tried to find out the demographic profile of the potential customers, number of vehicle of the potential customer, their satisfaction level and how they determines their important features of the VTS. Carjacking is a common incident in Bangladesh, after analysis, it is very clear to find out that how many people of our country are the victims of this carjacking. How can they recover themselves from it. In such circumstances, the contribution of police is very essential. Nevertheless, lack of some reasons they cannot available everywhere in Bangladesh. In this situation, VTS service is very effective to support the potential customers.

Finally, the researcher has made some recommendations based on findings.

Background of DataNet

DataNet – as its name states that company was formed for providing communication technology support to the client in transporting electronic data. DataNet began its operation 2005, and the conception was the result of Mr. Moshtaq Ahmed’s (Current Chief Architect and CEO) belief that network and connectivity technologies could play a pivotal role in the general African networking environment. DataNet began with a modest office in Mbabane, Swaziland, and initially offered a traditional range of IT hardware, software and trading products to the Swaziland market. They focused on providing high end backhaul solutions, networked video surveillance solutions, application development consultancies and basic connectivity solutions to customers in Swaziland.

DataNet also has been engaged in building ICT capacity in Government of Swaziland. The company is continuously creating capacity in the government technicians and developers in various latest and complex technologies. DataNet also provided consultancy services for developing Elderly Social Grant System, MTEF Budgeting System under Fiscal Restructuring project. Recently the company finalized the Civil Contractors registration and online evaluation system with a view of e-Governance application development in African countries.

The quality of their offerings enabled them to quickly build up a strong client base, and these clients soon began demanding much more from the company, ranging from strategic IT consultancy to advice on incorporating technology into business processes. They realized that adding true value to their clients meant not just developing individual hardware or software solutions, but providing on-going, fully-integrated packages of technology and services, based on simple and transparent fixed-price or per transaction pricing structures.

Actually the success and obvious cost saving of the connectivity products led to a boom in demand for DataNet’s products and expertise. Organizational Hierarchy of DataNet Introduction

A vehicle tracking system combines the installation of an electronic device in a vehicle, or fleet of vehicles, with purpose-designed computer software at least at one operational base to enable the owner or a third party to track the vehicle’s location, collecting data in the process from the field and deliver it to the base of operation. Modern vehicle tracking systems commonly use GPS or GLONASS technology for locating the vehicle, but other types of automatic vehicle location technology can also be used. Vehicle information can be viewed on electronic maps via the Internet or specialized software. Urban public transit authorities are an increasingly common user of vehicle tracking systems, particularly in large cities.

Some vehicle tracking systems integrate several security systems, for example by sending an automatic alert to a phone or email if an alarm is triggered or the vehicle is moved without authorization, or when it leaves or enters.

Other scenarios in which this technology is employed include:

  • Stolen Vehicle Recovery: Both consumer and commercial vehicles can be outfitted with GPS units to allow police to do tracking and recovery. The police can activate the tracking unit in the vehicle directly and follow tracking signals.
  • Fleet Management: When managing a fleet of vehicles, knowing the real-time location of all drivers allows management to meet customer needs more efficiently. Whether it is delivery, service or other multi-vehicle enterprises, drivers now only need a mobile phone with telephony or Internet connection to be inexpensively tracked by and dispatched efficiently.
  • Asset Tracking: Companies needing to track valuable assets for insurance or other monitoring purposes can now plot the real-time asset location on a map and closely monitor movement and operating status.
  • Field Service Management: Companies with a field service workforce for services such as repair or maintenance, must be able to plan field workers’ time, schedule subsequent customer visits and be able to operate these departments efficiently. Vehicle tracking allows companies to quickly locate a field engineer and dispatch the closest one to meet a new customer request or provide site arrival information.
  • Field Sales: Mobile sales professionals can access real-time locations. For example, in unfamiliar areas, they can locate themselves as well as customers and prospects, get driving

directions and add nearby last-minute appointments to itineraries. Benefits include increased productivity, reduced driving time and increased time spent with customers and prospects.

  • Surveillance: A tracker may be placed on a vehicle to follow the vehicle’s movements.
  • Transit Tracking: This is the temporary tracking of assets or cargoes from one point to another. Users will ensure that the assets do not stop on route or do a U-Turn in order to ensure the security of the assets.

Vehicle Tracking Systems are widely used worldwide. Components come in various shapes and forms but most utilize GPS technology and SMS Messaging. While most will offer real-time tracking, others record real time data and store it to be read, similar to data-loggers. Systems like these track and record and allow reports after certain points have been saved.

 Vehicle tracking system in Bangladesh

There is a huge market for vehicle tracking system in Bangladesh. About twenty vehicle tracking service providers in Bangladesh are currently providing their services. Among them, Talukder ICT Bangladesh first introduced this service first in Bangladesh. Later Trackbangla and Finder vehicle tracking system service providers earn huge popularity in this sector. In 6 Sep 2009, Dhaka Metropolitan
Police (DMP) started to use Automatic Vehicle Tracking System, which helps them to track their vehicle, and reduce the rate of vehicle damage from unwanted circumstances.

Now in Bangladesh twenty companies including the followings organizations are providing VTS services:

  • OnTrack1
  • TrackBangla
  • MATTRACKS
  • Talukder Vehicle Tracking System
  • Geoplan Bangladesh
  • Finder Vehicle tracking System
  • NTrack Ltd.
  • Vehicle tracking system m2m-Bangladesh

However, very recently, some mobile companies understand the importance of this service, that’s why they will introduce vehicle tracking service within very short time. These organizations are:

Grameenphone

Banglalink

Reasons for getting VTS popular

The security of the vehicle is the primary concern of all vehicle owners. It becomes necessary to track vehicle when it goes on road. It can meet with an accident or may be some theft. No one can always call a driver but there are chances that may get false information. Vehicle owners and researchers always look for and are keen to install new and improved security systems for vehicles. One of the latest additions in security systems for vehicles is vehicle tracking systems. As the name suggests vehicle tracking is determining the location of the vehicle with high degree of accuracy through latest technology. This system enables the owner to closely monitor and track the vehicle also allowing him to check the history of vehicle movements. Vehicle tracking system has done wonders in maintaining the security of vehicle. This system is the biggest technological advancements to track the activities of the vehicle. The electronic device installed in the vehicle comprises of a GPS receiver, wireless RF modem, controller board and battery. The vehicle tracking hardware is fitted on the vehicle that is not visible to anyone who is inside the vehicle. This system uses Global Positioning System to track the vehicle and locate its position. Then it uses satellite or radio systems to send the coordinates and the location data to the monitoring center. Software is used at this monitoring center to plot the vehicle on the map. In this way vehicles are tracked by the owners. Vehicle tracking systems are becoming increasingly popular due to real time tracking facility.

In case when the vehicle is stolen, this system can be used in finding the location of the vehicle and coordinating with the police for further action. Some vehicle tracking systems can also be used to detect unauthorized movements of the vehicle. Vehicle tracking system helps a lot in monitoring and tracking personal and commercial vehicles. The use of vehicle tracking system has improved overall productivity with better fleet management which in turn offers better returns on investments. In both personal and business purposes this system improves safety and security. It plays a major role in day to day life.

Vehicle tracking system is one of the most popular technological advancements all over the world which has made our personal and professional life lot easier. It enables us to track the exact location and whereabouts of the vehicle in no time. Vehicle system functions with the help of different technologies like Global Positioning System (GPS) and traditional cellular network Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) along with other radio frequency mediums. Amongst all GPS is very popular in the market for giving accurate results. Vehicle tracking system is mostly used in businesses that involve fleets to keep a real time track on its vehicles. Vehicle tracking system in Bangladesh consists of GPS device which brings together GPS and GSM technology using tracking software. The GPS device attached in the vehicle send timely updates of the location to the route station through the server of the cellular network that is displayed as a map. The location details are transferred to the users in the form of SMS, email or other data transfers.

Vehicle tracking will have large prospect in the near future in Bangladesh which will revolutionize the way we travel.

Vehicle Tracking Software

Vehicle tracking can be used when someone have multiple cars and need to track the location of one of the family members who is using the car or when your business includes operating fleets and a person needs to track the whereabouts of the vehicle. A person can track any vehicle by installing vehicle tracking software. Once it is installed in the vehicle it will alert about the location, car trouble, speed traps and also about theft or off route driving.

Features of Vehicle Tracking Software

Vehicle tracking systems are available in two types- real time vehicle tracking or passive tracking. In case of real time vehicle tracking anyone can see the live happenings of the vehicle and in passive reporting system it records the details of the vehicle and can be downloaded later. The software that a person is opting for should be accurate and contain detailed maps and must contain selection of report types that can be customized as per the company’s metrics. The basic reason for this is the more a person is able to generate the customized mapping the more valuable software will be.

  Recommendations

Today, in our country carjacking is a normal matter. This kind of incidents are occurring any time, any place and police cannot provide the quick support to people to locate their vehicles immediately. In this circumstances vehicle tracking service may not be the substitute of police activities only but may be a good solution to keep in safe position.

In our country, many people believed that Insurance Company is better to keep the vehicles safe from uncertainty than vehicle tracking service provider. But true fact is insurance company only compensate them when the vehicle will damaged or lost, they can not provide the customers mental satisfaction when they leave their vehicles for their important task. But vehicle tracking service can locate their vehicles, can lock the vehicles engine, and communicate with drivers easily without any cost.

Price is a very important factor to enter into a new market. About more than 40% people wants to pay between 500-1,000taka. So at the time of selling product pricing is very much important. It is recommended at first low price, comprising to other companies, will set up to attract more customer, because if the price is same to other companies than customer will not get extra options to buy a new service. If low price they will buy first and then will judge the quality to buy further. And if they be satisfied with the service then the will buy it again even it be high priced.

After three months (February – April) of market survey very recently (in May) it has been found that there comes few other companies (Grameenphone and Banglalink) in this sector. So it is to be highly recommended that before launching the service DataNet should change some features of this service. And it is recommended that the new features could be less price, daily updates of the vehicle, set-up cameras inside the vehicles etc. Because the name Grameenphone is a well-known name and also has a strong brand loyalty in the market, if DataNet failed to do it then they can not compete them.  So some extraordinary features will knock the customers mind to take the service very easily and undoubtedly.

To establish a competitive position in the market DataNet have to be careful about some criteria like are price, availability, security level, advertisement which will ensure the importance level and different features of the service.

DataNet have to use its own distributors channel and outlets; it is an opportunity and strength   also. It will reduce the extra costs.

Huge promotional activities (including low price) have to take to instable the market first, because it will make concern to other companies, then observing the market a stable price will be set up finally. It is recommended to take pull and push strategy. Under pull strategy various free gifts will be provided to the final consumer and under push strategy various incentives will be provided to the customers. Under push strategy DataNet can influence the customers for taking its new service. Promotional activities have to be taken more during some days, which are related to create some awareness among people.

 Conclusion

There is a huge market for vehicle tracking system in Bangladesh. People in Bangladesh who have vehicles are very anxious about how they can protect their valuable asset. Now a day, carjacking is very normal fact. These type incidents are occurring enormously. To reduce these type bad incidents, vehicle tracking system can be very effective. In our country police are very busy to their works, and it is not possible to them to find or arrest the carjacker immediately. So if we using vehicle tracking service, we can easily locate our vehicle, shut down or lock the engine. In Bangladesh there are some GPS software and hardware developing companies but they still haven’t gained much of popularity as in other countries. In Bangladesh vehicle tracking system is mainly used for business purposes.

If the costs of hardware and software are reduced many people in Bangladesh would opt for trackers in their personal vehicles and also for tractors, tourist buses. Government also has to reduce the restrictions imposed upon the availability of digital maps for commercial use for encouraging the software companies in developing cost efficient tracking solution. The main issue in Bangladesh is although the sales of personal and commercial vehicles are increasing the price of trackers is too high.

Vehicle tracking will have large prospect in the near future in Bangladesh, which will revolutionize the way we travel.
