Hepatitis C is a contagious illness affecting mainly the liver, caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The infection is frequently asymptomatic, but chronic disease can lead to scarring of the liver and eventually to cirrhosis, which is usually apparent after numerous years. In various cases, those with cirrhosis will go on to increase liver failure, liver cancer, or existence threatening esophageal and gastric varices.
