The international Global Methane Initiative, launched in November 2004, committed USA and 13 additional countries to progressing cost-effective, methane recovery and use to be a clean energy resource. The Initiative targets on methane recovery in addition to use opportunities in the agriculture, coal, landfill, and oil system sectors. The initiative currently targets on five sectors, which are known sources associated with anthropogenic methane emissions: farming, coal mining, municipal solid waste, municipal wastewater, and oil systems.
