Obedience to Parents

Obedience to Parents

Obedience to parents means to obey the order of our parents. Children should do their best to obey their parents. Children should not argue with their parents, refuse to help them, or make a fuss over every small matter. Disobedience is base ingratitude and one of the greatest cruelties a child can inflict upon a parent who has toiled for years for his sake and lavished upon him all his affections, regardless of self.

Our parents deserve the highest of regards from us in the world. It is through them that we have seen the light of the world. When we are born we were in a helps condition. We could not have lived if they had not taken care of us in our infancy. They took care of us when we were children and could not, help ourselves. They watch over us when we are ill and do their best to make us good and happy. Parents feel very happy if their son or daughter is kind, polite, helpful, and obedient. If their child is rude, disobedient, or lazy, they feel disappointed and even embarrassed. After all, the way a child behaves reflects on his parents. For us, they work from morning to night. So it is the duty of every person to obey his parents.

Our parents wish us well. They sacrifice their comforts and pleasures for us. Obeying parents is a direct commandment of Allah. The word obey cannot be separated from the idea of honoring them. So it is proper that we should honor and respect our parents. It is our duty to obey our parents, that is, to do always what they tell us to do. All that we have is given to us by our parent’s food, clothing, and education.

We are all to our parents. So we should try to please them in all possible ways. It is our solemn duty to support them in their old age. In Islam, showing obedience to parents is the fastest way of earning blessings from them and from Allah. God is pleased with him the Holy Quran. According to Hindu scripture, if the parents are pleased, all the gods and goddesses are pleased.

The lives of great men tell us that they were good sons above everything. Showing them kindness, compassion, gratitude, reverence, and respect, praying for them, and supporting them financially if they are in need are incumbent upon every Muslim who has one or both parents alive. Hazrat Bayazid Bustami, Hazrat Abdul Quader Zilani, Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar were the best example of this sort of obedience. Everyone makes mistakes, if parents do something bad that is against the religion or against the wish of their children, it becomes the responsibility of the child to have patience and tolerance.

It follows, therefore, that if we wish to prosper in life. We should love and obey our parents and have our trust in them. Obedience is a very simple way of showing gratitude for these benefits. It is a way that is well within the reach of the young infant as well as the full-grown son.
