International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)

The inclusion of disabilities is an important condition for the defense of human rights, sustainable development, peace, and stability. In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly resolution declared the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). Held around the world on 3rd December, IDPD mobilizes support for crucial issues related to the integration of people with disabilities, supports awareness-raising of disability issues, and draws attention to the advantages of an inclusive and open community for all. In order to celebrate the day, numerous lectures, conferences, workshops, and presentations were arranged. Various projects and activities were carried out by many social and non-profit organizations. The year 1981 was announced as the “International Year of Disabled Persons” by the United Nations General Assembly in the year 1976. It was intended to emphasize the recovery, prevention, promotion, and equalization of opportunities at international, regional, and national levels for individuals with disabilities. “Full participation and equality” was the theme chosen for the celebration of the International Year of Disabled Persons, to raise awareness of the rights of disabled persons for their equal growth in society, to stress their well-being as regular people, and to boost their socio-economic status. UN governments, civil society organizations, research institutions, and the private sector are encouraged to support IDPD by coordinating events and programs together with organizations for people with disabilities.

For the International Day of People with Disabilities, the UN announces a theme to follow each year. The annual theme focuses on how society should aim for inclusivity by eliminating physical, technical, and attitudinal obstacles to individuals with disabilities. This has been happening since 1992, when the General Assembly declared the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December. The celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities includes an appropriate theme in order to better enforce the rules and regulations for persons with disabilities in society. People from all over the world are enthusiastically contributing to the celebration in order to help encourage equal rights for people with disabilities and to promote and improve their morality. This great event is celebrated by organizing art exhibits that promote the artworks created by people with disabilities to demonstrate their skills. In order to draw people’s attention to the challenges of people with disabilities and to raise awareness of the important roles of people with disabilities in society, people often engage in protest events. One billion people with disabilities are one of the most excluded communities in our society and are among the hardest hit in terms of deaths in this crisis. Except under normal situations, people with disabilities are less likely to have access to health services, schooling, employment, and community engagement. To ensure that individuals with disabilities are not left behind, an integrated approach is required. The main goal of celebrating this event is to raise people’s awareness and appreciation of the problems of disabled people with disabilities. Supporting people with disabilities to achieve their self-respect, rights, welfare, and protection in society. Providing equal opportunity, decreasing poverty, and promoting their role in society in order to provide them with proper recovery. Through all pillars of the United Nations’ work, the United Nations Disability Inclusion Policy provides the basis for sustained and transformative progress on disability inclusion. The United Nations system reaffirms, through the Policy, that the complete and full realization of the human rights of all people with disabilities constitutes an inalienable, integral and indivisible aspect of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. To make people aware of the true state of people with disabilities, it is really important to celebrate this occurrence. People with disabilities are part of the “largest minority in the world” and face a lot of challenges in all facets of life due to the lack of sufficient services and protections for them.
