Presentation on Are our zoos cruel to Wild Animals
Presentation Transcript:
1. Animals rite:
- Zoos are not cruel to wild animals, mainly because zoos rarely keep wild animals. This is one of the most common misconceptions about modern zoos. In the past, zoos would hire collectors to go out into the wild and bring back specimens to put on display.
- This practice is completely discredited and irresponsible. Modern zoos participate in captive breeding programs, so most animals in zoos today were bred and born in captive situations. Almost all the animals that are under human care would be unable to survive in the wild.
- In this way, zoos serve a vital purpose as genetic “reservoirs” that are able to keep species alive if the unthinkable happens and they go extinct in the wild. They also serve to educate people about the plight of many of these animals, and most directly fund conservation efforts.
- Modern zoos are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the American Zoological Association (AZA). All facilities that are accredited by these organizations need to follow very strict standards that are set forth with the well-being of the animals in mind.
