When the air contains more carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and other harmful gases, it is known as ‘Air pollution’. Air pollution is acute in big cities and industrial areas. Various types of motor vehicles ply on the streets of big cities and produce different kinds of harmful gases. Mills and factories also produce smoke, fume and several harmful gases. Open dumping and dead animals were thrown in the open space also pollute the air. To minimize air pollution we must raise awareness among the public. The World Health Organization estimated in 2014 that every year air pollution causes the premature death of some 7 million people worldwide. Studies published in March 2019 indicated that the number may be around 8.8 million. Newspapers, radio, and TV can play an important role in this respect. Strict laws must be imposed so that unfit vehicles may not ply on the road. No transport should be allowed to ply on the road without a fitness certificate. Lawbreakers must be punished severely. Traffic police and other relevant agencies must be given proper training. With the increase in population in cities air pollution is also increasing. The influx of people from villages to cities and the growth of slums are also responsible for air pollution. Urban outdoor air pollution is estimated to cause 1.3 million deaths worldwide per year. Children are particularly at risk due to the immaturity of their respiratory organ systems. Different social and non- government organizations may come forward to address these problems. The government should create scopes for the job in villages so that people need not come to cities. To establish a peaceful and healthy society, we must keep our cities free from air pollution. We want our city to be a pollution free city. We would like to see our city as beautiful and worthy of living.
