Every year, the theme of World Hearing Day changes, focusing on different aspects of hearing health and care. The first event took place in 2007. It was previously known as International Ear Care Day. WHO hopes to encourage governments, organizations, healthcare professionals, and individuals to take action to prevent hearing loss, improve access to hearing care, and support those living with hearing impairment through this observance.
Every year, the WHO chooses a theme, creates educational materials, and makes them freely available in multiple languages. It also coordinates and reports on global events. Individuals and communities involved in hearing care are encouraged to organize activities to increase awareness of the importance of ear and hearing care and to encourage people to seek services. The day is also an opportunity to educate the public about the causes and consequences of hearing loss, as well as to advocate for policies and programs that make better hearing care services available to all.
WHO hosts an annual World Hearing Day event at its headquarters in Geneva. In recent years, an increasing number of Member States and other partner organizations have participated in World Hearing Day by organizing a variety of activities and events in their respective countries. WHO welcomes all stakeholders to participate in this global initiative.
Health campaigns, seminars, workshops, and public awareness initiatives may be held on World Hearing Day to disseminate information about hearing loss prevention, proper ear care, and available treatments. It also aims to dispel stigmas and misconceptions about hearing loss, fostering a more inclusive society for people with hearing difficulties.
