Wipeout Can now be Played Via a Web Browser Thanks to a New Fan-made Port

The endeavor, which was announced on Twitter by programmer Dominic Szablewski, involves recompiling the game’s original source code, which was released in 2022 so that it could run in a web browser.

“The quality of the leaked source is abysmal,” Szablewski writes in a detailed blog post about the project.

“From what I can tell, it primarily contains the Wipeout ATI 3D Rage Edition of the game, a mediocre port for Windows bundled with ATI GPUs.”

Each port of the original game, from the PAL PlayStation version to the NTSC PlayStation, PC DOS, Windows 95, and ATI Rage Edition versions, according to Szablewski, was “haphazardly piled on top” of the preceding one, making the original source code impossible to interpret.

Psygnosis created Wipeout for the original PlayStation in the United Kingdom. The first game in the series, launched in 1995, was a big success. Wipeout Omega Collection, which included remasters of several of the classic games – Wipeout HD, Wipeout HD Fury, and Wipeout 2048 – was released in 2017.

“There’s still a lot of bugs to fix (both old and new) and more features to implement,” Szablewski writes in his blog post. If you want to help, go to [the Github page], clone the source code, and build the game yourself.”

“If anyone at Sony is reading this, please consider that you have (in my opinion) two equally good options – either let it be or shut this thing down and get a real remaster going,” he concludes. I’d be delighted to assist!”
