The negligent working attitude in library – An Opinion
My recent exposure to working conditions and working attitude in the school library has left much to be desired. The world of libraries is changing rapidly, and those who lead them need to realize that they need the expertise. My dissatisfaction leaves me with no option but to report this matter for your kind attention and action. Academic libraries are undergoing a public, challenging and frequently contested transformation. Negligence is the failure to adhere to the standards of behavior that the law puts in place to ensure the safety of others.
First of all, there is a problem with discipline. Those given library duties regularly leave their work stations ahead of time. By default, much of the responsibility for adapting to a changing information environment seems to fall to library directors who forge ahead at their own risk. This denies the students the use of the facilities that become unavailable because of this negligent attitude.
The quiet required in a library is to facilitate easy undisturbed reading. One of the hazards of organizational change is presuming that it should take place in a certain way. Sadly, it has become the norm for many students to chat albeit quietly. Nevertheless, the voices carry in the large reading area, becoming a nuisance that denies avid readers the peace they need. Ringing phones and message tones are almost a permanent feature in the library.
Many students may be seen using their mobile devices with scant respect for the sanctity or facility of a library. The library is only as effective as its ability to understand and support the emerging information needs of its campus.
At a very basic level, we must care about the institution, about the people we work with and about the library. I sincerely hope that these minor but serious offenses may be corrected so that the library can fall back to its declared intention, which is to be a place of research, reading, and learning.
