Sugilite

Sugilite

Definition –

Sugilite (/ˈsuːɡɪlaɪt/ SOO-gi-lyt) is a rare mineral and a gemstone best known for its vibrant pink to purple colors. High-quality specimens are sought after by mineral collectors and lapidarists (people who cut and polish gems). The crystals are rarely found and the form is usually massive. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 and a specific gravity of 2.75 to 2.80. It is mostly translucent.

Sugilite is a sodium potassium lithium silicate mineral. Small amounts of manganese produce the pink to purple color displayed by some specimens of sugilite. Its chemical composition is as follows: KNa2(Fe,Mn,Al)2Li3Si12O30

The composition of sugilite varies because iron, manganese, and aluminum can substitute for one another. This makes the color and other properties of sugilite variable.

Sugilite is an example of a mineral name pronounced wrongly more often than correctly. Named after Japanese petrologist Dr. Kenichi Sugi, whose name is pronounced with a hard “g” (as in “geese”), whereas most English speakers mispronounce it with a soft “g” (as in “gene”).

Occurrence and Properties of Sugilite –

Sugilite was first described in 1944 by the Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi (1901-1948) for an occurrence on Iwagi Islet, Japan, where it is found in an aegirine syenite intrusive stock. It is found in a similar environment at Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada. In the Wessels mine in Northern Cape Province of South Africa, sugilite is mined from a strata-bound manganese deposit. It is also reported from Liguria and Tuscany, Italy; New South Wales, Australia and Madhya Pradesh, India.

At the Iwagi Islet locality, sugilite occurred in an aegirine syenite, and accounted for 3% to 8% of the rock’s volume.
