Learning English for Career Development
As an international language English is very important both for students and active life. Before the emergence of Bangladesh, English had been given importance for a pretty long time in this country. The High Schools used to be called High English Schools. During the post-Bangladesh period, Bengali has been declared as the state language of this country. In present-day Bangladesh, we feel the necessity of English very keenly. We cannot bid farewell to English. Without learning English we have to face many problems in our day to day life. Being one of the richest languages in the world English is related to modern Bengali culture. This contact has brought us the best ideas from the west.
We are supposed to be deprived of coming in contact with the modern western civilization. We can get all that is best in European and American thoughts through English. We shall be unable to keep pace with the advancement of the modern science of the west. Without learning English we cannot be at par with the progressive forces of the world. Higher education cannot be obtained through the vernacular as English is the medium of instruction in higher studies. Higher education cannot do away with English at all. English is the treasure of learning of all kinds. Opinion differs from man to man as to the future of English in Bangladesh. Some opine that English should continue to be the medium of education up to a certain level while others say that it should be replaced by Bengali. Our educational system is theoretical. As books for higher studies are written in English, good technicians, engineers, and doctors cannot be produced if English is not studied by our students. So, from the very beginning of student life we must study English to be well-placed in future life. It is praiseworthy that our government has already introduced English as the medium of instruction in Cadet Colleges. English is being introduced as a second language in many countries of the world and in our country too make international relations.
In our country, English is treated as a second language so that we may have friendly relations with other countries in the world. The future of English is bright in Bangladesh. Our students can get employments both at home and abroad by studying English. To get the job of a postman also one has to learn English as an address on the cover page of letters and parcels are written in English. To get jobs in commercial firms, international airlines and government offices students have to know English well. The introduction of a system of communicative English is a good step to impart the knowledge of English well to our students. Through this direct method, students can learn English well and easily. Communication of ideas through speaking English makes the students learn English in an easy way. Introducing English as a second language does not mean that we are ignoring our mother tongue. From this perspective, we can say that we shall not be unable to express ourselves through the vernacular.
Learning English as a second language and acquiring proficiency in it does not mean that it is the wastage of energy. Rather learning English makes us prosper both nationally and internationally. So English is made a compulsory second language to give importance to learn it. The course of the study of English should be simple so that the students can learn English easily. By studying English our students can conic out with flying colors in the days to come.
