Directory Service is a network service that identifies all resources on a network and makes them accessible to users and applications. It should make the physical network topology and protocols transparent so that a user on a network can access any resource without knowing where or how it is physically connected. Directory Service is much more than a database technology that stores users and groups. It contains data that is concise and strictly relevant to an entry. By contrast, a database contains large amounts of data for each entry that may, or may not, be directly relevant to the entry.
