Continuum mechanics relates to physical properties of solids and fluids which are independent of virtually any particular coordinate system in which they are seen. These physical attributes are then manifested by tensors, which are mathematical objects who have the required property of being independent of coordinate system. These tensors might be expressed in coordinate systems for computational convenience.
