World Meteorological Day

Every year a number of programs and events are planned to celebrate World Meteorological Day. On or around March 23, the United Nations (UN) World Meteorological Day is held annually to commemorate the founding of the World Meteorological Organization on that date in 1950. A slogan for World Meteorology Day is proclaimed every year by this organization, and this day is observed in all member countries. The World Meteorological Organization coordinates Scientific and Technical Forum, to examine a diagram of all the previous exercises and accomplishments of the World Weather Watch (telecommunications and meteorological forecasts) just as to actualize its advancements in the following century, in the Geneva headquarters on 23rd of March to recognize the “World Meteorological Day”. It showcases the important contribution to the protection and well-being of society of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and is celebrated with events around the world. Topical weather, environment or water-related issues represent the themes chosen for World Meteorological Day. The day also highlights the contribution to the protection and well-being of society rendered by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services. World Meteorological Day is not a public holiday, but a global observance. It was the very first celebration of World Meteorological Day in 1961, commemorating its entry into force at the World Meteorological Organization conference on 23rd March 1950. Award facilitation was also carried out on the day for individuals who contributed to public safety during natural calamities. Seminars, discussions, and talks were held that highlighted the value of meteorology and how it helped to predict natural disasters and save people’s lives around the world.

In 1873, at the first International Meteorological Congress in Vienna, Austria, the International Meteorological Organization was created. The goal of the organization was to create networks of meteorological stations. The telegraph and enhanced weather forecasts have connected these networks. This has contributed to the protection and reliability of shipping services. Whereas in the year 1950, the World Meteorological Organization was first established on 23rd March and became the United Nations’ specialist meteorological agency to operate the weather and climate from one place and to conduct operational hydrology, including all relevant geophysical sciences. Geneva, Switzerland, which is a member of the United Nations Development Group, is the headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization. In 1951, it became the specialist body of the United Nations for meteorology, operational hydrology, and related geophysical sciences. In contributing to people’s protection and health, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) plays a crucial role. In providing food protection, water supplies, and transport, their work is critical. Since 1961, World Meteorological Day has been observed each year on March 23. To celebrate World Meteorological Day, several countries issue postage stamps or special postage stamp cancellation tags. These stamps also represent the theme of the event or mark the achievements of meteorology in a country. On or near to World Meteorological Day, several prizes for meteorological research are awarded or reported. These prizes include:

  • The International Meteorological Organization Prize.
  • Professor Dr. Vilho Väisälä Award
