The lifetime of a PV based SPS is restricted mainly by the actual ionizing radiation on the radiation belts and the Sun. Without any protection method, this is likely to cause the cells to degrade by about a percent or two each year. Deterioration is probably be more rapid during periods of high experience of energetic protons coming from solar particle episode events.
