Statement of the Problems
Dhaka New Market area is one of me busiest areas of Bangladesh. Gausia Market, Chandni Chalk Market, NurMansion, IslamMansion, New Super Market, DhakaCollege, TeachersTrainingCollege, GovernmentLaboratorySchool and College Nilkhet Book Market etc. all are situated around New Market. People from different locations come to this area for shopping purpose. This area is such a place where all types of clothes, garments, home applications and books can be purchased in a cheaper rate. This specialty of this area has made it the gathering place for hawkers. They have occupied the area to such an extent that it has became difficult for passers by and vehicles to move.
Objectives of the Study:
- To identify the causes of the problems of footpath occupied by hawker’s.
- To know about the effects of those problems.
- To find out the remidies for this problem.
Scope of the Study
The main focus of he study is to determine the problem of footpath occupied by hawker’s. The solutions of the problems have also been enclosed herewith as the main focal points of this paper.
Definition of Footpath Problems
The inconvenience created directly to me passers by and indirectly to the vehicles because of me illegal occupation of footpath are by the hawkers.
Limitation of the Study
- Limited span of time
- Small size of the respondents
- Scarcity of research work
- Unwillingness of the respondents
Materials and Methods
To collect the information about the socio-economic condition of the Street Hawker of Bangladesh, an interview schedule was developed. So that a questionnaires made (Appendix table) on the basis of this schedule a total 25 Street Hawker were interviewed from New Market area Street Hawker were selected by random sampling method.
This report is prepared on the basis of primary and secondary data

The data were put on a tabular form and it was analyzed statistically like proportions average and percentage. The results of socio-economic characteristics have been shown in tabular form. The accuracy of the data obviously depends on the answers of 30 Street Hawker. It is hoped that the survey was at least as accurate as possible.

Findings
- Problems of footpath are deeply rooted problems as people of all ages are found here working as hawkers and they are doing it for a long time.
- The business of hawkers has been found very profitable and therefore more and more unemployed people are joining have and making the problems more complicated.
- Hawkers spend a lot of time in their business and create a lot of problems although the day.
- The law-enforcing agencies are indifferent to the illegal occupation of the footpath by the hawkers.
- Some powerful and influential quarters are seemingly patronizing the illegal activities of the hawkers.
- Many hawkers have takes up their profession due to poverty and unemployment.
- The government’s indifference to the problems is another major cause of the problems.
Recommendations
- Drawing the attention of the government and the powerful sections of society to the seriousness of the problems of footpaths occupied by the hawkers should be the first priority.
- The government have to create job opportunities and conduct rehabilitations program for the hawkers.
- Legal actions must be taken against the occupation of the footpath.
- Supervision of the footpath must be ensured.
- Public awareness should be duly raised.
- The government should be committed to taking proper steps against any linkes of any influential quarters in this respect.
- The holiday market system can be reinstated.
Conclusion
This study of the Problems of footpath occupied by hawkers indicate the scenario of the community of them. It is important that if a society develops all the community will develop. Since the socio-economic conditions of the hawkers is not good enough it indicates that our society are not developed enough. The hawker are not the separate community of Dhaka city. So, we should take action to solve the problem of footpath occupied by hawkers.
