Limitations of communication model

Limitations of communication model

The communication model plays a vital role in understanding the communication process. A model is widely used to depict any idea, thought, or concept in a simpler way through diagrams, pictorial representations, etc. These models are useful in many ways. Models of communication are conceptual models used to explain the human communication process. Though the communication model is useful in a variety of ways, it is not free from limitations.

Limitations of communication model

  • Rigidity:

The communication model is rigid in nature. Communication is an ever-changing process.  Communication cannot always be presented in a rigid model. But communication models are given through symbols that are inflexible or rigid.

  • Non-inclusion of some aspects:

In a communication model, only the important aspects of the communication process are included and less important aspects are ignored. Less important elements or any supporting information are not shown in a communication model. But in some cases these unimportant aspects become important. So, it is very difficult to form a true idea about the massage from a model.

  • Difficult to form an idea about a complete message:

As a model is a symbolic representation, only very important elements are presented in it. The less important elements are not shown and thereby, it becomes very difficult to form an idea about a complex message from a model.

  • Lack of detailed explanation:

A model is a symbolic representation of a communication process. The communication model represents the communication process through symbols. Details of a message are not available in a model which hinders reaching a sound decision. An elaborate explanation is not always available in the communication model.

  • Non-availability of experts:

Another limitation in developing a communication model is that expert hands are not always available. Initiators of communication models think that their work is enough and includes all. But their thinking is wrong. As a result, the development of a time befitting model is difficult. Researchers lose their interest further because of such thinking.

  • May not be cost effective:

Formulation of a communication model for transmitting a message requires a lot of valuable time. Preparation of any model requires a lot of money as well as valuable time. But the benefits may be less from the cost of application of such a model. Hence it is a problem.

  • Requirement of skilled manpower:

To run the communication model properly, effective manpower is essential. But such manpower may not always be available.

To get optimum results, the respected party should be aware of the limitations of the communication model.
