Geriatric Medicine is rapidly evolving into both a hospital-based specialty and a specialty concerned with community care. It is emerged as an area of medicine focusing on health promotion and the treatment of disease and disability in later life. It differs from standard adult medicine because it focuses on the unique needs of the elderly person. A geriatrician has special knowledge of the aging process and special skills in the diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and rehabilitative aspects of illness in the elderly.
