Faceted Classification is a system for organizing materials into categories based on a systematic combination of mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive characteristics of the materials and displaying the characteristics in a manner that shows their relationships. This system allows a subject material to be classed under more than one facet, which creates more than one path to access the material. It also tends to result in a complex notation because each facet must be distinguishable as recorded. Faceted Classification can enable a user to navigate information along multiple paths corresponding to different orderings of the facets.
