Double taxation takes place because corporations are viewed separate legal entities from their shareholders. When corporations fork out dividends to investors, those dividend repayments incur income-tax liabilities with the shareholders who receive them, even although the earnings that provided the cash to pay this dividends were already taxed at the corporate level.
