The term “residential gateway” was originally used to distinguish the economical networking devices given for use in the home from similar devices found in corporate LAN situations. A residential gateway allows the text of a local area network to a large area network. The WAN can be a larger computer network for example a municipal WAN that provides connectivity to the residences inside the municipality, or the online world.
