Parallel Lines and Intersecting Lines: Definition in Geometry

Parallel lines: When two lines not at all meet in space or on a plane no substance how long we extend them, we say that they are parallel lines. There are two lines that are constantly the same distance apart and never touch. In order for two lines to be parallel, they must be drawn in the same plane, a completely flat surface like a wall or sheet of paper.

The following lines are parallel.

Parallel lines are useful in understanding the relationships between paths of objects and sides of various shapes. For example, squares, rectangles, and parallelograms have sides across from each other that are parallel.

Intersecting lines: When lines meet in space or on a plane, we say that they are intersecting lines. There are two lines that share accurately one point. This shared point is called the point of intersection. Although we’re dealing particularly with lines in this lesson, line segments also intersect where they share a common point.

The following are intersecting lines.
