Leg cramps can happen for no apparent reason, recognized as idiopathic leg cramps, or as a symptom or complication of a health condition, recognized as secondary leg cramps. Leg cramps usually happen at night or after an exercise session or from exertion. This can even lead to lactic acid buildup. Causes of secondary leg cramps can include pregnancy, exercise, certain types of medication such as statins and liver disease.
