Cognitive dissonance is the psychological anxiety or distress experienced by a person who holds two or additional contradictory attitude, thoughts, or values at the same time, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing attitude, thoughts, or values. Cognitive dissonance theory is founded on the hypothesis that persons seek consistency between their expectations and their realism.
