Distributed cognition is a psychological theory that information lies not only within the character, but also in the individual’s societal and physical environment. Distributed cognition theory was developed in the mid-1980s by Edwin Hutchins. Using insights from sociology, cognitive science, and the psychology of Vygotsky it emphasizes the social features of cognition.
