According to Reddit Users, the Apple Watch’s Wrist Detection Feature May Now Work With Tattoos

Users who have tattoos on their wrists have long been irritated by the Apple Watch’s wrist detection feature’s inability to perceive their tattoos as skin. However, several Reddit users have reported that the current watchOS 10 beta has resolved this issue for them.

According to one Reddit user, after updating to the current firmware, they were able to properly use wrist detection on an Apple Watch Ultra. This is a huge change, as the Apple Watch previously locked itself when worn on a wrist with tattoos, necessitating the usage of passcodes on a regular basis.

Many more Reddit users have confirmed that the Apple Watch now works with tattoos on watchOS 10, albeit the fix’s reliability varies depending on the design and placement of the tattoo. Some users reported improved results when the tattoo was placed higher up on the wrist, but others complained that the feature still didn’t perform well with thick or elaborate designs.

As someone who has tattoos, I understand the frustration of having to choose between wearing a watch and revealing my tattoo. It’s encouraging to see that Apple has addressed this issue with the most recent software update.

WatchOS 10 will be available on September 18 for people who want to try out the improved wrist detection capability. This coincides with the release of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2, giving people the opportunity to see if their Apple Watch is now compatible with tattooed skin.
